Sherpa community celebrates Lhapso festival in New York, strengthening cultural identity and unity
NEW YORK-Sherpa people in New York gathered to celebrate Lhapso. It is an important festival that brings the community together and honors their traditions.
The event started with a special prayer called Gyashi Puja. Monks led the prayers, and many people joined to seek blessings for a good year. Everyone dressed in colorful Sherpa clothing, and the venue was decorated with prayer flags.
People enjoyed traditional Sherpa songs and monk dances. They shared stories about their culture and how Lhapso was celebrated in Nepal. Many young Sherpas took part to learn about their heritage.
Organizers emphasized the importance of preserving these traditions. Mr. Temba Sherpa, President of the United Sherpa Association, stated that Lhapso is not just a celebration but a way to remember where Sherpas come from and ensure that young people stay connected to their roots.
Many people attended the event, demonstrating the strength of Sherpa culture, even far from Nepal. The United Sherpa Association plans to host more events to support the growth and unity of the Sherpa community.
Attendees praised the event’s organization, particularly the thoughtful setup. Many appreciated the gravel placed on the ground, which made the space more comfortable and accessible.
Sherpas in New York look forward to more gatherings and hope to share their culture with an even wider audience in the future.
