903 Dead in Nepal Flood Disaster, Search Continues for 4,200 Missing
KATHMANDU– The death toll from the massive floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers has risen to 903, while more than 4,247 people are still missing, according to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The report was released at 9 AM on Monday.
Authorities say 903 bodies, including human remains, have been recovered from several districts hit by the floods. Many bodies were found far away from the disaster sites because fast-moving floodwaters carried victims and debris downstream for long distances.
Chitwan has reported the highest number of recovered bodies with 272.
Other districts include:
• Nawalparasi East – 207
• Nawalparasi West – 151
• Nuwakot – 95
• Gorkha – 62
• Dhading – 55
• Tanahun – 37
• Rasuwa – 24
The number of missing people has increased sharply.
Nuwakot has the highest number of missing individuals at 1,558, followed by Rasuwa with 865.
The government also reports:
• 933 workers from a hydropower project are missing
• 592 foreign nationals are missing
• 127 Nepalis who were accompanying foreign tourists are missing
• 83 security personnel are unaccounted for (45 from the Nepali Army, 25 from Nepal Police, and 13 from the Armed Police Force)
A total of 267 people have been injured. Out of them, 156 have already been discharged after receiving treatment. To support medical needs, the government has deployed six specialised surgical teams to the worst-affected areas.
Search, rescue, and relief operations have been expanded.
More than 20,819 security personnel are working across the affected districts:
• 8,722 from the Nepali Army
• 7,894 from Nepal Police
• 4,203 from the Armed Police Force
So far, 10,451 people have been rescued. Helicopters have played a major role in the rescue efforts, with 411 flights completed, including 17 flights today. The Nepali Army has rescued 3,344 Nepalis and 252 foreign nationals, including 15 Chinese and 7 Indian citizens who were evacuated from a hydropower site on Sunday.
Authorities say rescue teams are still searching for missing people, and more bodies are being found as floodwaters continue to move downstream. The government has urged people living near riverbanks to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
