Pope Francis passes away at age 88

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and a global religious leader, has passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican announced his death early Monday morning, marking the end of a historic papacy that lasted more than a decade.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio  in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the first Latin American pope when he was elected in 2013.  His leadership was defined by a commitment to social justice, care for the poor, and efforts to modernize the Church. He frequently spoke about climate change, economic inequality, and the importance of interfaith dialogue.

Throughout his time as pope, Francis was known for his humility and his dedication to connecting with people from all walks of life. Unlike his predecessors, he often chose to live simply, refusing luxury accommodations and prioritizing direct outreach to the vulnerable.

Despite facing health challenges in recent years, including lung infections and surgeries, Pope Francis continued his mission, traveling to various countries to promote peace and unity. His messages of hope and compassion resonated with millions worldwide, making him one of the most influential religious figures of modern times.

World leaders and Catholic communities across the globe are mourning his passing. Many have shared tributes, reflecting on his impact and the changes he brought to the Vatican. As the Church prepares for his successor, the College of Cardinals will gather to elect a new pope in the coming days.
