Dumji 2026 began with morning prayers and blessings led by the monks of Namche Monastery. Throughout the festival, residents participated in traditional dances, family gatherings, and community meals. The atmosphere remained peaceful and joyful, with clear mountain weather supporting the event from start to finish. Elders noted that this year’s festival felt especially meaningful, as more young Sherpas joined the ceremonies and helped maintain cultural practices.
A central part of Dumji tradition is the selection of the lawas, the individuals responsible for next year’s festival duties. The lawas carry important responsibilities, including organizing preparations, supporting ritual activities, and ensuring that all cultural and spiritual requirements are fulfilled. Community leaders confirmed that the lawas for Dumji 2027 have already been chosen through the traditional selection process. Their early appointment allows them to begin planning and coordinating well ahead of time.
Residents expressed pride in the smooth completion of Dumji 2026 and emphasized the importance of keeping this cultural heritage alive for future generations. Many community members shared that Dumji is not only a religious event but also a time for unity, respect, and celebration of Sherpa identity.
With the lawas selected and preparations already beginning, Namche Bazaar looks forward to Dumji 2027 with confidence and excitement.
