Kulman Ghising removed as NEA managing director amid controversy

KATHMANDU– Kulman Ghising, well-known for revolutionizing Nepal’s electricity sector, has been dismissed from his role as the Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The decision was made during a recent Cabinet meeting, leading to widespread debate and criticism.

Ghising gained widespread praise for his efforts to end load-shedding in Nepal, a problem that had plagued the country for years. He introduced innovative measures to manage electricity distribution, ensuring that Nepalis had reliable access to power. His leadership also helped improve the NEA’s financial condition, turning it into a profit-making organization.

However, the government has now replaced him with Hitendra Dev Shakya. According to Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, the decision was made because Ghising allegedly failed to follow certain government directives. Critics argue that this is an unfair dismissal of a person who made significant contributions to Nepal’s energy sector.

Political leaders and members of the public have voiced their opinions. Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal called the move an abuse of authority and warned of its potential legal repercussions. Opposition parties have accused the government of prioritizing politics over progress, emphasizing that Ghising’s work had greatly benefited the nation.

The controversy has sparked protests, with many Nepalis demanding that Ghising be reinstated. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of support for him, with users highlighting his achievements and questioning the government’s decision.

The removal of Kulman Ghising has brought attention not just to leadership in the NEA but also to larger issues of governance and accountability in Nepal. As the debate continues, many are left wondering what the long-term impact of this decision will be on the country’s energy sector and its journey towards sustainable development.
