U.S. Targets Foreign Visitors Giving Birth for Citizenship
CONNECTICUT- The United States government has created a new Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force to stop foreign visitors from coming to the country only to give birth. Officials say some people use short‑term visas to enter the U.S. so their baby can automatically receive American citizenship.
The task force will work with several federal agencies to find and investigate companies that organize birth‑tourism trips. These companies often sell “U.S. birth packages,” help clients hide their real travel purpose, and arrange housing near hospitals.
The announcement comes shortly after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing birth tourism and protecting the meaning of U.S. citizenship. The government says birth‑tourism networks can create security risks, lead to unpaid hospital bills, and encourage visa fraud.
Under U.S. law, any child born on American soil is a citizen. However, lying on visa applications or traveling under false pretenses is illegal. The new task force plans to increase visa screening, share information between agencies, and take action against organized birth‑tourism operations.
Officials say more updates will be released as the task force begins its work.
