Following threats from local groups, airline operators suspended flights to the Khumbu, Everest region
KHUMBU- NAMCHE BAZAAR – Citing threats from local groups, including the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, the Nepal Air Service Operators Association has suspended helicopter and commercial flights in the Everest National Park area indefinitely.
Pandey, the association’s first vice president, reported that the suspension of rescue, charter, and commercial flights began on Sunday. January, 5th, 2025
Local stakeholders warned that pilots would be detained and action taken upon helicopter landing. Pandey stated that flights would remain suspended until safety guarantees were provided.
The suspension is a result of restrictions imposed by Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu Pasang-Lhamu Rural Municipality, and local groups and organizations. They have expressed concerns that helicopter flights and landings in the national park area are harmful to the forest, environment, wildlife, and their habitats.
A ban on commercial helicopter flights has been implemented since January 1, 2025. Despite discussions between the association and local authorities, a resolution has not been reached. Additionally, The association also reported that Buddhist prayer flags have been placed on helipads in the Khumbu region, creating additional barriers to flight operations.
