Fairfax County Police have released body‑camera footage showing the tense moments officers responded to a deadly stabbing inside a home in the Mantua neighborhood. The incident occurred on February 23 and involved multiple victims inside the residence.

VIDEO: Caution: Disturbing footage. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.

According to investigators, officers entered the apartment after receiving reports of a violent domestic attack. When they arrived, they found 54‑year‑old Chhatra Thapa, a man originally from Nepal, actively stabbing his injured son‑in‑law with a large knife. The newly released video shows officers repeatedly ordering Thapa to drop the weapon. Instead, he continued the assault and raised the knife toward officers, prompting them to open fire. Thapa died at the scene.

Police later confirmed that Thapa had already killed his wife, 52 year old Binda, and his daughter, 33 year‑old Mamta, before officers arrived. A toddler who was inside the home during the attack was found unharmed.

Authorities described the scene as extremely chaotic and violent. The officer who fired the shots has been placed on restricted duty while the case undergoes internal and independent review, which is standard procedure in police‑involved shootings.

The release of the footage is part of Fairfax County’s transparency policy, which requires public disclosure of video evidence after major critical incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
