Nakkhu Prison calls all escaped inmates to return, including Rabi Lamichhane

Kathmandu, Nepal — September 12, 2025 Nakkhu Prison has asked all inmates who escaped during recent protests to surrender peacefully. This includes Rabi Lamichhane, the leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, who was released from custody on September 9 after a crowd of supporters gathered outside the prison.

The prison administration said that many detainees left the facility during the unrest, and they are now urging everyone to return and follow the legal process. Officials warned that those who stay in hiding could face tougher punishment and may lose their rights to future legal support or social benefits.

Lamichhane had been held in connection with an investigation into financial misconduct involving the Swornalaxmi Cooperative. His release came after protesters broke through security barriers and threw stones at the prison. Authorities said they let him go to prevent further violence and protect lives.

After Lamichhane’s release, videos showed him speaking to the public, while his wife arrived at the prison to meet him. The event sparked a wave of prison escapes across Nepal, with thousands of inmates reportedly leaving detention centers in the following days.

In a public notice, Nakkhu Prison stated:

“All individuals who left the prison during the incident are requested to appear in public and cooperate with the legal system. Surrendering is the only way to protect your rights and return to society.”

The prison emphasized that justice must be respected and that returning voluntarily could help reduce future penalties. They also reminded the public that legal institutions exist to ensure fairness and accountability.

The situation has raised serious concerns about prison security and political tensions in Nepal. Lamichhane’s case continues to attract national attention, especially among young activists demanding reform and transparency.

Government officials say they are investigating the events and working to restore order. Meanwhile, families of escaped inmates are being encouraged to help their loved ones return safely.
