Nepal erupts in youth led protests over a social media ban and gov corruption

KATHMANDU- Nepal is facing a wave of deadly protests as thousands of young people take to the streets in response to a government ban on major social media platforms. The demonstrations, led primarily by Gen Z activists, have escalated into violent clashes with police, resulting in at least 19 deaths and more than 100 injuries.

The unrest began after the government banned 26 popular platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter), citing concerns over misinformation and online fraud. Officials claimed the platforms failed to register locally and comply with new digital regulations. However, many citizens view the move as an attempt to suppress free speech and silence criticism.

In Kathmandu, protesters stormed the Federal Parliament, waving flags and chanting against corruption. Riot police responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition. Fires broke out in several districts, and hospitals are overwhelmed with injured civilians.

The protests have spread to other cities including Pokhara, Butwal, and Itahari. Curfews have been imposed, and tensions continue to rise.

While the social media ban triggered the unrest, protesters say the real issue is deeper: widespread corruption, nepotism, and lack of accountability. Viral videos exposing the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children have fueled public anger, especially among youth facing unemployment and economic hardship.

International organizations have expressed concern. The United Nations has called for restraint and urged the Nepalese government to respect democratic principles and human rights. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli defended the ban, saying it was necessary to protect national security.

As the protests continue, Nepal stands at a critical crossroads. The youth are demanding change, and their voices are growing louder. Whether the government responds with reform or repression remains to be seen.
