Sherpa community in Calgary gathers to celebrate losar with festive traditions
Calgary, Canada — The Sherpa Community of Calgary came together in a dazzling celebration of culture and heritage to mark Losar, the Sherpa New Year, on March 1, 2025 , at the Nepali Association of Alberta Northeast Calgary venue.
Draped in vibrant traditional attire, community members showcased the rich legacy of their Himalayan roots.
With approximately 14 Sherpa families residing in Calgary, the event was a significant gathering that emphasized the importance of cultural preservation. Attendees were treated to spirited traditional dances, melodic folk music, and a feast of authentic Sherpa cuisine, all of which honored the unique traditions of their heritage.
Maya Sherpa, a Canadian resident and one of the community member, remarked, *“Losar is not just a celebration; it’s a way to bring our community together, to honor our roots, and to share our culture with the next generation.”*
Losar, which translates to “New Year,” is one of the most important festivals in Sherpa culture. It symbolizes the start of a new lunar year and is celebrated with rituals that honor deities, dispel negative energy, and bring blessings for prosperity and happiness.
This year’s celebration in Calgary was a poignant reminder of the enduring strength of cultural traditions in bringing people together, transcending borders and generations.
