Sherpa community in New York celebrates Loshar with festive spirit

New York, NY – The  Sherpa community in New York came together this weekend to celebrate **Loshar**, the traditional Himalayan New Year,in a vibrant display of cultural pride and unity. Hosted by the United Sherpa Association at their community center in Queens, the event showcased the rich heritage of the Sherpa people with traditional rituals, cultural performances, and heartfelt gatherings.

The festivities included **ceremonial prayers to honor ancestors and bless the new year**, followed by spirited performances like traditional dances and songs.

This year’s Losar also emphasized the importance of cultural preservation and sharing heritage with younger generations and the wider community. Leaders and participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with their roots while building bridges within the multicultural fabric of New York City.

The celebration of Losar not only strengthens the bonds of the Sherpa community but also invites the broader public to experience the joy and depth of their culture. With such events, the Sherpa people continue to inspire cultural appreciation and unity.

Nima Sherpa, the Khumbule Media founder and the former Secretary and Media Coordinator of Sherpa Kyidug, shared his regret for not being able to attend the Losar celebrations, stating, *”Unfortunately, due to a family event here in Connecticut, I couldn’t join this year’s Losar gathering. However, my heart was with the community as they celebrated our cherished traditions. I am immensely proud of how everyone comes together to preserve and promote our culture, ensuring its vibrancy for future generations.”*
