Supreme Court Allows President Trump to Stop TPS for Haiti and Syria

NEW YORK – The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a major ruling that gives President Donald Trump full legal power to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from Haiti and Syria. TPS is a federal program that allows people to stay in the United States when their home country is facing war, natural disaster, or other dangerous conditions.

In a 6–3 decision, the Court said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can decide when TPS should stop and that lower courts cannot block or delay the government’s decision. This ruling confirms that the administration has complete authority to review conditions in each country and decide whether TPS should continue or end.

TPS for Haiti was originally granted after the 2010 earthquake, and TPS for Syria was granted because of the ongoing civil war. Many people under TPS have lived in the U.S. for years, working legally and building families. The Court’s decision now allows the government to officially end these protections.

Total Number of People Affected

• Haiti: about 350,000 people
• Syria: about 6,100 people
• Total: 356,100 people

These individuals could lose legal status and work authorization once TPS is officially ended.

The ruling is one of the strongest legal approvals for the Trump administration’s immigration policy. It confirms that TPS is temporary and can be ended whenever the government decides conditions in the home country have changed.
