Hindu–Muslim Dispute Turns Deadly in Sunsari, Nepa
Sunsari, Nepal — A deadly communal clash between Hindu and Muslim groups in Dewanganj, Sunsari has left two people dead and more than two dozen injured, prompting authorities to impose an indefinite curfew across multiple areas. The situation remains tense as security forces continue to patrol the district.
The violence began during a Hindu religious procession, where disputes over loud music, flags, and the procession route escalated into a confrontation with local Muslim residents. The argument quickly grew into a large-scale clash as both sides gathered supporters.
Police deployed to the scene reportedly used live ammunition to control the crowd, resulting in the deaths of Om Prakash Mehta (30) and Jay Prakash Mehta (22). Several others were injured by stones, sticks, and police firing.
Government Criticized for Slow Response
Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government is facing sharp criticism from opposition leaders, civil society groups, and locals for what they describe as a slow and uncoordinated response to the escalating violence.
Critics argue that:
• The government waited too long to deploy adequate security forces.
• The curfew was imposed only after casualties occurred.
• Communication from the Home Ministry was unclear and delayed, causing confusion among residents.
Human rights groups have also questioned whether the government failed to act quickly enough to prevent the situation from turning deadly.
Official Actions
After the incident intensified, the Prime Minister convened a National Security Council meeting. A five-member investigation committee has been dispatched to Sunsari, and the National Human Rights Commission has launched an independent probe into allegations of excessive force by security personnel.
The government has announced Rs. 200,000 compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.
