Mamdani beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the race. Even though the full results are not final yet, Cuomo congratulated Mamdani and said he had earned the win.

Mamdani’s campaign focused on helping regular people. He talked about lowering rent costs, making public buses and trains free, and building more affordable housing. Many young people and community leaders supported him.

If Mamdani wins in the November election, he will become New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. He will face other candidates, including Republican Curtis Sliwa and current Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent.

After the win, Mamdani told a large crowd, “This is proof that when we come together, we can change our city for the better.”
