U.S. suspends immigrant visa processing for 75 countries including Nepal

CONNECTICUT– The United States has temporarily suspended immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, a move announced as part of the Trump administration’s new immigration policy review. The decision affects people applying for permanent residency visas, while tourist, student, and other short‑term visas remain unchanged.

According to the State Department, the suspension is linked to a broader effort to tighten screening procedures and evaluate the financial background of applicants. Officials say the review focuses on whether applicants may become dependent on public assistance after arriving in the U.S.

Countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe are included in the suspension. Among them are Nepal, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Egypt, Brazil, Somalia, Russia, Iran, Yemen, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine.

The announcement has created uncertainty for thousands of families who were preparing for interviews or waiting for final approval. Immigration lawyers warn that the pause could lead to longer delays even after processing resumes.

The U.S. government has not provided a specific date for when immigrant visa services will restart for the affected countries. For now, applicants are advised to monitor updates from their local U.S. embassy or consulate.
