TikTok expected to face ban in U.S. on sunday
Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to support a law that could ban TikTok in the United States starting Sunday, January 19. This law, passed last April, requires TikTok to cut ties with its parent company in China, ByteDance, to avoid the ban.
The law aims to protect national security and privacy. The court says this law does not violate TikTok’s or its users’ free speech rights. Instead, it focuses on keeping American users’ personal data safe from foreign threats.
Even though TikTok argues that the law limits free speech, the court believes it’s necessary for national security. The Biden administration has chosen to let the incoming Trump administration enforce the ban, leaving TikTok’s future uncertain.
TikTok worries that without clear instructions, it may have to shut down on January 19 if no solution is found.
