The Dalai Lama congratulates Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister

Dharamsala, India – September 13, 2025 Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has extended heartfelt congratulations to Sushila Karki following her historic appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. In a message sent from Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama praised Nepal’s enduring support for Tibetan refugees and expressed hope for the country’s continued progress under Karki’s leadership.

“As you know, the Nepalese and Tibetan peoples have historically enjoyed a close relationship,” the Dalai Lama wrote. “I am very grateful to the government and the people of Nepal for providing facilities for the rehabilitation of Tibetan refugees following their forced escape from Tibet after 1959.”

He acknowledged the contributions of the Tibetan community to Nepal’s economic development and emphasized the importance of inclusive growth. “Such achievements are all the more meaningful when they really improve the lives of poor and needy people,” he added.

Sushila Karki, 73, was sworn in late Friday evening at Sheetal Niwas, becoming Nepal’s first female Prime Minister. Her appointment follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amid nationwide protests led by Gen Z activists demanding political accountability. Karki was selected through a rare consensus between youth movements and traditional political forces.

The Dalai Lama concluded his message with a blessing: “I wish you every success in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Nepal in these challenging times. With my prayers and good wishes.”

Her six-month interim government is tasked with restoring stability and preparing for national elections scheduled for March 2026.
