Protest at PM’s residence after surprise ministerial appointments
Kathmandu, September 14 — A group of young activists led by Sudan Gurung held a late-night protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar. They were upset about the new ministers being chosen without asking for their input.
The group, called “Hami Nepal,” had earlier suggested Sushila Karki to become the interim Prime Minister. But after she appointed Om Prakash Aryal as Home Minister, Rameshwor Khanal as Finance Minister, and Kulman Ghising as Energy Minister, the protesters felt ignored and betrayed.
Some youths even confronted Gurung during the protest. He tried to calm them down and told the families of the deceased, “If they try to remove what we’ve placed, I’ll take it back. The Nepali people are powerful—no one can stop us.”
The GenZ group also expressed anger. They said Aryal had joined talks as a helper but became a minister without discussing it with them. Gurung criticized Aryal, saying, “He made himself Home Minister from inside, while I was outside managing dead bodies.”
Aryal is known as the legal advisor to Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah. He had joined earlier talks on behalf of the GenZ group. But now, some activists say their movement has been hijacked.
This incident shows growing tension among youth-led political groups in Nepal. Many are asking for more transparency and respect in decision-making.
