New York offers free air conditioners to help residents beat the heat
New York City is helping people stay cool this summer by giving free air conditioners or fans to those who qualify. The Cooling Assistance Benefit program started accepting applications on April 15, 2025, and will continue until funds run out.
Who Can Get a Free Air Conditioner?
To qualify, a person must
– Have a household member who is 60 years or older, under age 6, or has a medical condition that gets worse in hot weather
– Meet income limits or be enrolled in programs like SNAP, Temporary Assistance, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
– Not have a working air conditioner or have one that is at least five years old
– Not have received a HEAP-funded air conditioner in the last five years
What’s Included?
The program covers
– Up to 800 dollars for a window or portable air conditioner or fan, including installation
– Up to 1,000 dollars for an existing wall sleeve unit
