The rally, which took place at Tribhuvan International Airport, marked a significant moment in the ongoing debate about Nepal’s political future.

Supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah chanted slogans such as “Vacate the royal palace for the king” and “Long live our beloved king,” expressing their dissatisfaction with the current political system. Many participants cited widespread corruption, economic struggles, and political instability as reasons for their support of the monarchy’s return. Rally participants said they were hoping for a change in the political system to stop the country from further deteriorating. Since the monarchy’s abolition in 2008, Nepal has seen 13 different governments, leading to growing public frustration.

Among the crowd was Kulraj Shrestha, a carpenter who had previously protested against the monarchy in 2006. “I was in the protests that took king  away the monarchy, hoping it would help the country, but I was mistaken,” Shrestha said. “The nation has further plunged, so I have changed my mind.”

While the rally showcased significant support for the monarchy, experts believe that the immediate return of King Gyanendra to power remains unlikely. The former king has not commented on the recent events, maintaining a low profile since his departure from the royal palace.

The rally highlights a growing divide in Nepal’s political landscape, as citizens grapple with the challenges of democracy and the legacy of the monarchy. Whether this movement will gain further momentum remains to be seen.
