Nepal opens 97 peaks for free climbing to boost tourism

KHUMBU– In a bold move to promote sustainable tourism and spotlight its lesser-known mountain regions, Nepal has announced free climbing access to 97 Himalayan peaks over the next two years. This initiative aims to attract adventure seekers to the remote Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, which are rich in natural beauty but often overlooked by international climbers.

The selected peaks range in elevation from 5,970 meters (19,590 feet) to 7,132 meters and offer stunning alpine landscapes, cultural richness, and challenging routes for mountaineers. By waiving permit fees, Nepal hopes to stimulate local economies and encourage exploration beyond the crowded trails of Everest and Annapurna.

Simultaneously, the government will increase the climbing permit fee for Mount Everest from $11,000 to $15,000 starting in September 2025. This marks the first fee hike in nearly a decade and is part of a broader strategy to manage overcrowding on the world’s highest peak.

Tourism officials say the dual approach will help balance conservation efforts with economic development. “We want to promote unexplored tourism products and destinations,” said a spokesperson from Nepal’s Department of Tourism.

This announcement is expected to draw global interest from climbers, trekkers, and tour operators seeking fresh challenges and authentic Himalayan experiences. For those looking to escape the Everest crowds and discover hidden gems, Nepal’s newly opened peaks offer a rare and rewarding opportunity.
