Nepal consulate in New York warns Nepali citizens in the U.S.

NEW YORK — The Consulate General of Nepal in New York has released an urgent public notice addressing all Nepali citizens currently living in the United States. The advisory highlights serious consequences for individuals who misuse U.S. government services or violate visa rules.

According to the notice, U.S. authorities have reported cases where foreign nationals — including some Nepali citizens who arrived in 2023 — attempted to obtain government benefits such as healthcare, housing assistance, family support, or educational aid by providing false or misleading information. Such actions, especially when linked to immigration or citizenship processes, can result in strict penalties, visa denials, and long‑term immigration complications.

The Consulate also drew attention to a new U.S. policy taking effect on January 21, 2026, which introduces a Visa Bond requirement. Under this rule, applicants who have previously overstayed their visas or worked outside the permitted category may be required to post a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 when applying for a visa or visa waiver.

Officials warn that these violations could lead to even stricter visa policies for Nepali nationals in the future, making it more difficult for genuine travelers, students, and workers to obtain U.S. visas.

The Consulate has strongly urged all Nepali citizens in the United States to follow immigration laws, avoid providing false information, and refrain from misusing government assistance programs. The notice emphasizes that responsible behavior is essential to protect the reputation and future opportunities of the broader Nepali community.

The advisory was issued on 15th Magh 2080 (Nepali calendar).
