Legendary singer Asha Bhosle passes away at 92

Mumbai, India — Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most celebrated playback singers and a global music icon, has died at the age of 92. She passed away on April 12, 2026, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after suffering from a chest infection that later led to multi‑organ failure and cardiac arrest, according to hospital officials.

Her family said her last rites will be performed on Monday. Her body will be kept for public viewing earlier in the day so fans and well‑wishers can pay their respects.

A voice that shaped Indian cinema

Asha Bhosle’s career spanned more than eight decades, during which she recorded over 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages. She was known for her unmatched versatility — from classical and romantic songs to cabaret, pop, ghazals, and folk music.

Some of her most loved songs include Dum Maro Dum, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Chura Liya Hai Tumne, and Mehndi Hai Rachnewali. Her collaborations with music composer R.D. Burman, who later became her husband, produced some of Bollywood’s most iconic soundtracks.

In addition to her massive contribution to Indian cinema, Asha Bhosle also recorded several Nepali songs that remain beloved across Nepal and Nepali-speaking communities worldwide. Her most iconic Nepali track, “Mann Le Mann Lai Chhune” from the film Saino, is still considered one of the greatest Nepali songs ever made. She also lent her voice to songs like “Maya Meri Saila,” “Chanchale Nani,” and “Pahilo Prem,” showcasing her ability to adapt to diverse musical cultures.

She received many honors during her lifetime, including the Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and a Guinness World Record for being the most recorded artist in music history.
