Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Society USA Provides Lifeline to Flood-Affected Families in Thame Village
NEW YORK- On August 16, 2024, the serene Himalayan village of Thame in Nepal faced a harrowing natural disaster as a glacial lake below Tashi Lapcha Pass burst, leading to a devastating flood. The catastrophe swept away homes, damaged critical infrastructure, and left numerous families homeless.
The community in Ward No. 5 of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality struggled to cope with the aftermath of this tragedy.
Stepping in to support the affected families, the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Sherpa Society USA took a proactive approach by mobilizing funds from communities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, and other nearby regions. The relief efforts culminated on January 30, 2025, with a well-organized aid distribution program conducted in collaboration with Yambu Thamichhoewa Kiduk in Kathmandu, where many displaced Thame residents were residing during the winter.
The aid was distributed in a systematic manner, ensuring fairness based on the extent of the damage:
– **Category A (Complete Damage)**: 23 families received NPR 105,000 each.
– **Category B (Severe Damage)**: 14 families received NPR 55,000 each.
– **Category C (Partial Damage)**: 13 families received NPR 28,000 each.
– **Category D (Minor Damage)**: 5 families received NPR 26,200 each.
Under the leadership of Treasurer Pasang Kanchi Sherpa, the relief distribution adhered to regulations set by the Ward Office No. 5. Special acknowledgment was given to Mr. Pasang Gyeljen Sherpa, the Ward Chairperson, for his presence and approval during the distribution process.
The Khumbu Pasanglhamu Sherpa Society USA expressed heartfelt gratitude to all donors and organizations who contributed to the cause. Special thanks were extended to Yambu Thamichhoewa Kyidug and its Chairperson, Mr. Pasang Chhiki Sherpa, for their collaboration in ensuring the successful execution of the relief program.
This initiative reflects the resilience and unity of the Sherpa community, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to supporting one another in times of crisis. The society concluded with a warm note of gratitude, “Thujiche!” to all who made this humanitarian effort possible.
Ngawang Sherpa “Garja,” the founding president of the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Sherpa Society, extends his heartfelt appreciation and shared his thoughts:
“On behalf of the society, I deeply value the unwavering support and collaboration of everyone involved in our initiatives.
