The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the building just after 6 PM wearing body armor and carrying an M4-style assault rifle. Witnesses described a rapid series of shots and chaotic scenes as workers dove for cover and barricaded themselves in offices.

Among the victims was 39-year-old Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a security detail at the time of the attack. Islam, a father of two with another child expected within weeks, reportedly tried to shield others before he was fatally wounded. Two civilians employed in the building also lost their lives, and a fourth remains hospitalized.

The suspect proceeded to the 33rd floor before taking his own life. His motives remain unclear, and authorities are investigating whether he had any prior connection to the location or its occupants.

The skyscraper was placed on immediate lockdown. More than 100 individuals were safely evacuated after hours of uncertainty. Outside, NYPD and federal agents cordoned off streets while ambulances lined the curb.

Mayor Eric Adams called the event “a brutal reminder of the dangers New Yorkers face—even in everyday spaces.”
Candles, flowers, and messages of grief began to appear on the steps of the building later that night.

In a city known for its resilience, the weight of yet another violent tragedy is felt deeply. The lives lost, especially that of Officer Islam—a guardian on and off duty—are being mourned across boroughs and communities.
