19-year-old Indian immigrant burned to death inside Walmart bakery oven in Canada
CANADA– 19-year-old Indian immigrant Gursimran Kaur was burned to death at the Walmart Bakery location at 6990 Mumford Road in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 19, according to a GoFundMe created by a Maritime Sikh Society executive.
According to organizers, Kaur and her mother had worked at Walmart for two years. Kaur’s father and brother are in India and are working to get to Canada amid the tragic incident.
The 6990 Mumford Road Walmart location will be closed until further notice. Flowers have been attached to a pole in the store parking lot to honor Kaur.
Kaur’s death is under investigation by Halifax Regional Police, in collaboration with Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service, according to an Oct. 21 press release. The police have not yet confirmed the cause and manner of death as the investigation is “complex and involves several partner agencies,” they said in an update on Oct. 22.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading speculation on social media.
